The Authenticity of Murano Glass

The glass produced by the masters on Murano is handmade and highly collectible, but there are lots of counterfeit Murano products out there. The best way to avoid buying one of these copies is to buy a piece directly from an artisan shop such as New Murano Glass, right on the island. If not, here are a few suggestions to make sure you’re buying a true collectible.

To make sure you're getting authentic Murano glass, look for the sticker that vouches for its authenticity. You might need a magnifying glass to locate and view it. Older bowls should have a gold foil sticker that says "Made in Murano, Italy.” Newer bowls will have a holographic sticker that contains a specific number. This number can be used to identify the particular furnace in which the bowl was made.

If there is not sticker, ask for a certificate of authenticity from the seller. The certificate should include information about the artisan who created the piece, as well as the production date. If a certificate of authenticity can't be produced, then there is a chance you may not be buying authentic Murano glass.
