The Misnomer of "Italian Leather"

There is really is no such thing as “Italian leather.” Italian leather does not come from Italian cows, but actually refers to the quality of workmanship. So how did the Italians corner the market? Some years back, when health and pollution laws came into effect, a lot of the tanneries around the world closed down, but not in Italy. The Italians decided that instead of closing down their tanneries, they would adhere to all the new laws and take on the tanning industry for the world.

Today, hides are shipped into Italy from all parts of the world to be tanned, and since hides have to be tanned before they become leather, they are called Italian leather. Much of the process of leather production here is done by hand. The tanners are skilled craftsmen, practicing a process that has been passed down from generation to generation. Hides are carefully inspected before treatment, with only the best hides being accepted, and quality checks are carried out at every stage of the way.
