A Day to Remember

Lest we forget, today is the 68th anniversary of the D-Day landings that began on June 6, 1944. So long ago, and so few veterans left to mark the occasion. It will long be remembered as the largest invasion ever of allied forces. I hope we'll never have need of one ever again! I suppose in time we will all but forget about it, relegating it to the history books and news reels, but it was a momentous event; real men lost their lives, and the tide was finally turned against Hitler's forces in France!

I remember calling my great uncle on the 50th anniversary of D-Day in 1992. He was a crusty old gent who was known for strong drink and colorful language, but he was at the Normandy landings, as well as the Battle of the Bulge. He was not a soft man by any means. Fortunately for him, he went in on D-Day plus 6, so he was spared the worst of it, but talking about it still made him burst into tears, saying how he'd "climbed those damned cliffs." These were the boys of the greatest generation! Let us not forget their sacrifice to freedom and democracy.
