A Family Tradition

Limoncello is the delicious result of an abundance of lemons and just a dose of patience. Every family has their own closely-guarded recipe. In the Cammarota home, Senora Lucia Toso and her grandson, Luigi, were kind enough to show us their very own family recipe.

You make limoncello with small lemons actually called “limes”. You don’t use the juice. The lemon flavor actually comes from the zest, the very outside of the lemon peel, where the essential oils are most concentrated.

Limoncello is served with dessert in slender cordial glasses. You sip it slowly. It’s very strong and sweet, not sour at all. Bottles are chilled in the freezer, along with the glasses, before serving.
