How to Dress for Churches in Italy

What do I wear inside the Catholic churches we visit?

Most Catholic churches in Italy require that knees and shoulders be covered when entering the church, even during the hot days of summer. This is particularly important when visiting St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, where shorts and tank tops are not allowed. As a general rule, shorts are not allowed in any church in Italy, especially the Vatican. Heads do not need to be covered. No bare shoulders inside the churches. During warm temperatures, we recommend pullovers and/or scarfs or shawls that can easily be removed afterwards. Capris are also approved except when visitnig the Vatican.
