Bitter Invention, or Divine Intervention?

Italians like coffee. Hmmm, no -- Italians LOVE coffee! So much that they consume over 14 billion espressos every year. Here, café is an essential part of life.

Coffee was first imported to Venice from the Ottoman Empire. The Catholic Church originally banned the stimulant, calling it the bitter invention of Satan. Pope Clement, however, loved the drink, and said “This devil's drink is so delicious...we should cheat him by baptizing it." Who knows if this story is true or not, but if so, the Pope certainly was ‘divine intervention’ to the creation of our morning fix.
