The best gelati are “artigianali” or artisan made, the key word here being “art.” There are a zillion gelato shops in Florence, and one of the most famous is Vivoli, located on a tiny street near the Piazza Santa Croce. Here, the Vivoli family has been practicing the art of making gelato for some 70 years.
Another favorite is Festival di Gelato, just off the main pedestrian drag leading from the Duomo to the Piazza della Signoria. A favorite order here is “una coppa di stracciatella y baccio.” Stracciatella got its name from the Roman egg-drop chicken soup, because bits of chocolate in the gelato resemble the egg threads in egg-drop soup. Another favorite product here is “Bacio,” which means “kisses” in Italian. It’s made from a candy by Perugini: dark chocolate and hazelnut bonbons. But here’s the secret: each one has a love quote or bit of poetry in English, French, and Italian. How romantic.
