What Makes Murano Glass So Special?

The process of making Murano glass is rather complex. The artisans consider their business a very serious matter, and heavily guard their glass-making secrets. Most are not in the business of entertaining tourists or explaining the process to them, but Andrea at the New Murano Glass Factory has given us an exclusive look at this ancient art.

The main differences between Murano glass and any other glass is that it’s created only on the island of Murano. It’s made from silica, soda, lime and potassium melted together in a special furnace at a temperature of 1500°C to reach a liquid state. Mineral additives are included for color and texture. Unique creations are made with special techniques and tools, many of which were developed in the Middle Ages. None of the glassware still being produced has such a rich history and so much artistic value as Murano glass.

Over the centuries there have been so many trends and techniques. Each Master has his or her own style. There is a wide range of techniques for manipulating glass into breathtakingly beautiful objects. The possibilities are endless.
