Yes, fashion does exist, and many say it was born here. Generally most Italians dress up for their work day with a theme of blacks and gray shades being prevalent. In the warmer months light colored cotton suits and attire still with a flair for 'dressy' are in season. Primarily in Rome and Florence, and primarily at night while out for dinner, will be the only times you‘ll want to consider a bit of a dressing up. Nothing with ties for men or formals for women, but a bit more thought than the average American blue jeans.
