Learning From Concordia

As we continue to learn more about the Costa Concordia disaster, it makes one realize that any company, especially those involved with travel and tourism, need to be ready to face unexpected events. Reading the transcript between the captain of that ship and the port authority could make one laugh if it weren't so incredibly sad! Here is a captain abandoning ship while there are still at least two to three hundred people on board, all the while making excuse after excuse for his behavior. Unbelievable! It seems like one big bad routine that just gets worse.

With the above in mind, it's important to always remember that the safety and needs of your guests and clients is of the utmost important. As a company, you need to have emergency measures in place to handle such unexpected events. In addition, you need an emergency plan to handle your company's image as you're dealing with such issues. Someone like the captain of the Concordia doesn't present a good image for any company, and I'm sure he will pay dearly for it! Just remember, do the right thing by your customers first; then worry about your image second. If you do the right thing for your customers thing during the unexpected, then dealing with the image fallout will be easier to handle.

Our prayers for those impacted by this tragedy!
