Centuries of Violence & Iconic Inspiration

The Amphitheatrum Flavium or the Roman Colosseum was the glorious monument to Roman imperial power and cruelty. There are perhaps few places where violence has been celebrated by so many.

Behind these arches and columns, you can almost hear centuries of Romans cheering and stomping their feet. Under these bloodthirsty crowds, another class of people stood sweating in their armor as hungry lions, tigers and even crocodiles paced in nearby cages…the gladiators.

While the games ended in the late 5th century, the Colosseum survives as one of the greatest examples of Roman architecture and engineering. Today, it is a gathering place for tourists, protesters, the Christian faithful, and proud Romans alike.
