In the quiet suburbs Rome, at the Historic Group of Rome, or Gruppo Storico Romano, you can learn how to be a gladiator.
The classes are led by a group of professionals who specialize in the reenactment of Roman life and gladiatorial combat, similar to Civil War re-enactors in the States. A two hour lesson is less than $80, and includes clothing, weapon rental, and museum admission. If you're not up for the fight, watching is free from a great viewing platform.
“Strength and honor” was the gladiator’s motto, even to the death, and the movies actually got it all wrong: thumbs up meant death to the gladiator, and thumbs down meant life. This is why you'll struggle to get a lift hitchhiking in Italy.
