The Cinta Senese Breed of Tuscany

Daniele Baruffaldi explains that the word “Cinta” refers to the black coat and white sash or “belt” that appears around this breed’s shoulders and front legs. The breed dates back somewhere before the Middle Ages, but they almost became extinct at one point. Fortunately, they are now off the endangered species list.

Pure Cinta Senese pigs are special because they can only be raised in Tuscany, are certified at birth, and must be raised with a combination of free-range grazing and feeding pellets that are fee from genetic modification. They receive DOP or Protected Denomination of Origin status from the European Union.
