In the Middle Ages, Florence was the home of the Renaissance and the center of banking and art. And one family in particular boasts a long and colored history: The Medicis.
The Medici family ruled the city almost continuously from the 14th to the 17th centuries. They built palaces all over the city, and for a time, lived in the Palazzo Vecchio, the original seat of the republic, or “signoria.” The Medici commissioned great artists to design and decorate the palaces. For example, a copy of Michelangelo’s David is in the piazza. The original is in the Accadamia Museam, also in Florence.
