On Fat Tuesday and Roman gods...

Since today is Mardi Gras, I thought you might be interested in the parade's connection to Florence, Italy.

Among the places we like to visit in Florence is the Museo Nazionale del Bargello (also known as the Palazzo del Popolo), an art museum that was once a prison and barracks. Today, it houses masterpieces by Michelangelo, Donatello, and others. Among its collection is a statue of Bacchus, the Roman wine god, who is portrayed as leading the Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans each year. This year, the actor Will Ferrell had the distinction of portraying Bacchus for party-goers in "The Big Easy".

Here's a link to a fantastic website that features the Bargello, as well as other places of interest throughout Italy: http://www.italyguides.it/us/florence/palace_of_bargello.htm

Be sure to visit the museum and Bacchus himself the next time you're in the beautiful city of Florence!
